The Kleist Forum Frankfurt (Oder), opened in 2001, is the central venue of the East Brandenburg city directly on the Polish border. The modern theatre and event building with around 800 seats maintains a programme of drama, music theatre, concerts, and dance guest performances. Unlike most mid-size cities, Frankfurt (Oder) does not have its own ensemble but receives touring stages and cooperates closely with the Kleist Festival, which annually honours the work of Heinrich von Kleist — the important poet was born in Frankfurt (Oder) in 1777. The German-Polish location shapes the repertoire with cross-border cooperations with Słubice on the Polish side of the Oder. Heinrich von Kleist was born in Frankfurt (Oder) in 1777, and the venue preserves his literary legacy.
Heinrich von Kleist, who in his short life (1777-1811) created Penthesilea, The Broken Jug, and Michael Kohlhaas, was born in Frankfurt (Oder) — the city cultivates his legacy.
