The Hessisches Landestheater Marburg is an important touring theatre in Hesse, based in Marburg since 1919 and travelling with its productions through Central and Northern Hesse. The house with around 320 seats at Schwanhof, a functional building from the 1970s, is a spoken-theatre stage with contemporary profile. Under the directorships of Eckehard Pistrick and since 2014 Matthias Faltz, the house has attained national attention through emphases on new drama and politically engaged material. The ensemble produces eight to nine premieres per season and then tours through over 30 venues between Kassel and Frankfurt, so that smaller cities without their own theatre also have access to professional repertoire.
Marburg is a university city — the theatre maintains a special relationship with Philipps University and regularly shows student co-productions.
