The Grillo-Theater is the main drama venue of Schauspiel Essen and the most tradition-rich theatre building in the city. Endowed by the major industrialist Friedrich Grillo and opened in 1892, it is an impressive example of the bourgeois patronage with which the rising Ruhr region underscored its cultural ambition in the 19th century. Located in the heart of Essen's city centre on Theaterplatz, the building survived wartime destruction and several renovations and remains the centre of Essen's spoken theatre to this day. Schauspiel Essen maintains a contemporary repertoire here between the cultivation of classics and premieres, and is regarded as one of the distinctive drama stages of North Rhine-Westphalia, embedded in the dense theatre landscape of the region.
The benefactor Friedrich Grillo died in 1888 — four years before the opening of the house named after him, which he himself was never able to enter.
