The Colosseum Theater Essen, opened on 27 September 1996 as one of the first dedicated musical theatres in Germany, occupies one of the most striking heritage industrial buildings in the Ruhr Region: the former Cremer & Wolffenstein factory hall of 1898, an example of Wilhelmine industrial architecture in red brick. The conversion by architect Heinrich Böll preserved the listed exterior façades, the historic roof construction with its iron trusses, and the central hall structure, while inserting a fully equipped musical theatre with 1,600 seats into the interior. The Colosseum opened with the German-language premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", followed by long runs of "Buddy — Das Buddy Holly Musical" (1996–1999) and the German premiere of Roman Polanski's and Jim Steinman's "Tanz der Vampire" (2000–2003). Under varying operators including Stage Entertainment, Mehr! Entertainment, and currently the BB Promotion group, the house has presented major German-language productions and touring versions of West End and Broadway shows. The combination of red-brick Ruhr industrial heritage and contemporary musical theatre programming has made the Colosseum an architectural landmark on the Ruhr.2010 European Capital of Culture circuit and a destination on the "Industrial Heritage Trail" of the region. The location at Altendorfer Straße connects directly to the historic Krupp industrial district, where the Krupp foundries — for over a century the world's largest steel producer — once shaped the city. The Colosseum exemplifies the structural transformation (Strukturwandel) of the Ruhr from heavy industry to cultural economy that defined Essen's post-2000 identity.
The Colosseum was a railway repair workshop of Cremer & Wolffenstein in 1898 — the 1996 conversion to musical theatre fully preserved the historic steel-truss roof construction, which today is visibly suspended above the auditorium.
