The Gewandhaus Zwickau is the Zwickau venue of the Theater Plauen-Zwickau and is housed in a magnificent historic building at Hauptmarkt — originally a Renaissance cloth trade house from 1525, later converted into a theatre. The hall with around 540 seats is used for drama, music theatre, and ballet; the house ensemble is shared with the venue in Plauen. Zwickau is the birthplace of Robert Schumann (1810); the Robert Schumann House cultivates his legacy, and the theatre regularly stages Schumann works. The city was also one of the most important industrial cities in Saxony and is today shaped by the Zwickau Volkswagen plant. Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau in 1810, and his birthplace nearby is today a museum.
Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau in 1810 — his birthplace at Hauptmarkt is today a Schumann museum, just a few steps from the Gewandhaus.
