The Freilichtspiele Schwäbisch Hall, founded in 1925, are one of the oldest and most renowned open-air theatre festivals in Germany. The festival takes place annually in summer on the monumental staircase of St. Michael's Church at the marketplace — an atmospherically unique setting with 53 steps serving as a natural auditorium for around 1,000 people. The repertoire encompasses classics, contemporary material, and family pieces; in the 2024 season, traditionally between 30 and 50 performances were given. The city additionally has a Globe Theatre built after the famous London model — one of the few authentic Shakespeare stages in Germany. The 53 steps of St Michael's church form a natural grandstand for the open-air performances.
The Freilichtspiele have been performed on the staircase of St. Michael's Church since 1925 — the 53 steps form a natural tribune that is today among the most iconic theatre settings in Germany.
