The Eduard-von-Winterstein-Theatre in Annaberg-Buchholz, founded in 1893, is the only professional multi-genre theatre in the Erzgebirge and serves the mining region between Chemnitz and the Czech border. The house with around 480 seats, a Classicist building, was named after the actor Eduard von Winterstein (1871-1961), who began his career here. The three-genre house with drama, music theatre, and ballet produces a broad repertoire with the Erzgebirge Philharmonic Aue. Despite its peripheral location, the house is supraregionally known for high-quality operetta and musical productions as well as for an engaged drama profile. The Ore Mountains region has been a UNESCO World Heritage mining landscape since 2019.
The Erzgebirge has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019 as a mining region — the mining tradition since the twelfth century also shapes the cultural life of the region.
