The Deutsches Theater Göttingen, founded in 1890, is one of the most tradition-rich city theatres in Lower Saxony and the home venue of one of the oldest theatre companies in Germany. The house with around 580 seats, a building rebuilt in 1989/90 at Theaterplatz, has special significance in German theatre history: here the young Friedrich Engels conducted his first plays in 1837, and Göttingen's university tradition shapes the profile to this day. The drama ensemble produces about ten premieres per season with a clear focus on contemporary drama. The Junges Theater Göttingen, an independent venue for children's and youth theatre, supplements the repertoire since 1957. Göttingen is home to a famous university whose scholars include the Brothers Grimm and Carl Friedrich Gauss.
Göttingen is the home university of Carl Friedrich Gauß, the Brothers Grimm, and many Nobel laureates — the intellectual tradition shapes the theatre audience to this day.
