The German-Sorbian People's Theatre Bautzen is a unique stage in Germany: it produces theatre in both languages of the region — German and Sorbian (Upper Sorbian), the language of the West Slavic minority of the Sorbs in Lusatia. The house with around 470 seats, founded in 1948, cultivates a repertoire of classics and contemporary drama in both languages as well as plays by Sorbian authors like Jakub Bart-Ćišinski. It is the only professional theatre in the world performing in the Sorbian language and thus a central place of Sorbian cultural preservation. Bautzen itself is the centre of the Sorbian minority; bilingual street signs, schools, and media shape the identity of the region. Around 60,000 Sorbs, a West Slavic minority with their own language, live in the Lusatia region.
There are about 60,000 Sorbs in Lusatia — they are a West Slavic minority with their own language who have lived in Germany for 1,500 years and have been constitutionally protected since 1990.
