Detroit Opera – known until 2022 as Michigan Opera Theatre – was founded in 1971 by David DiChiera and is the leading opera company of the state of Michigan. Its home, the Detroit Opera House, is a theatre built in 1922 and lavishly restored in 1996, its reopening regarded as a symbol of Detroit's cultural renewal. The company maintains grand repertoire and presents visiting ballet, and under new leadership has embraced an emphatically forward-looking, director-driven profile. As a cultural anchor of the city, Detroit Opera combines operatic tradition with the renewal spirit of the "Motor City".
