The Bühne 64 in Wismar is an independent theatre in the UNESCO World Heritage city and cultural centre for Western Mecklenburg. The house, located in a historic brick building on Bürgermeister-Haupt-Straße, has around 200 seats and maintains an experimental approach with drama, readings, and musical events. Unlike most municipal theatres, Bühne 64 does not maintain a permanent ensemble but works with freelance artists and directorial cooperations. Wismar itself has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002 as a Hanseatic brick Gothic city; the medieval old town also shapes the theatre programming with historical material and North German authors. Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau filmed his 1922 vampire classic Nosferatu in Wismar, which the town celebrates annually.
Wismar served Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau in 1922 as the setting for his silent film classic Nosferatu — A Symphony of Horror — the city celebrates this annually with film screenings.
