The Brechtbühne is the drama venue of the Augsburg State Theatre, housed on the converted historic gasworks site in the Oberhausen district. Named after the city's most famous son, the playwright Bertolt Brecht, who was born in Augsburg in 1898, it serves as the central drama stage during the multi-year general renovation of the main house. The gasworks industrial monument, with its striking gasometers, is today a cultural quarter — theatre in the shadow of historic industrial architecture, only a few kilometres from Brecht's birthplace. The house maintains a modern, often socio-politically committed drama repertoire and takes up Brecht's legacy with regular productions of his works. The gasometers tower over the auditorium, lending the venue an unmistakable industrial atmosphere.
Augsburg celebrates Brecht every three years with the Brecht Festival — the very city the poet regarded with mixed feelings throughout his life.
