The Teatro Petruzzelli is the largest theatre in Apulia and the fourth-largest in Italy – a monumental building with a far-visible dome in the heart of Bari. Opened in 1903 by the Petruzzelli merchant family as a private theatre, it quickly became one of southern Italy's most important stages, hosting many stars of the 20th century. In 1991 an arson attack almost completely destroyed the house; only after a long legal and political struggle was it faithfully rebuilt and ceremonially reopened in 2009. Today the Petruzzelli is a state opera foundation and the cultural landmark of Bari, where opera, ballet and major concerts draw a broad audience.
