Teatro Pergolesi

Jesi, Italy

The Teatro Pergolesi is the opera house of Jesi in the Marche, named after the composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, born in the city. Opened in 1798 as the Teatro del Leone, it later took the name of its most famous son. The magnificent auditorium, richly adorned with frescoes and stucco, ranks among the most beautiful in the region. The house is the centre of the Festival Pergolesi Spontini, dedicated to the work of Pergolesi and of Gaspare Spontini, also from the region. As a teatro di tradizione, the Pergolesi combines the stewardship of its musical heritage with a lively opera and concert season in the heart of the Marche.

Pergolesi died at just 26; his "Stabat Mater" and "La serva padrona" remain among his most-performed works.
