The Teatro Lirico di Cagliari is the opera house of the Sardinian capital and the island's leading music-theatre institution. The present modern building opened in 1993, after the historic Teatro Civico had been destroyed by bombing in 1943; the long construction made the new house a symbol of cultural reconstruction. As one of Italy's state opera foundations, the Teatro Lirico has earned a reputation for an ambitious programme that often departs from the usual canon – with revivals of rarely staged works and internationally noted recordings. With its large orchestra and chorus it forms the musical heart of Cagliari and Sardinia and attracts conductors and singers of international rank.
The present 1993 building replaced the Teatro Civico, destroyed by wartime bombing in 1943.
