The Teatro Donizetti is the opera house of Bergamo, dedicated to the great bel canto composer Gaetano Donizetti, who was born and died in the city. Originally built in 1791, the house was named after Donizetti in 1897 and comprehensively restored in 2020. It is the centre of the annual Donizetti Opera Festival, which cultivates the composer's output – including numerous rediscoveries – at the highest level and draws an international audience. Set in the heart of the Lombard city at the foot of the picturesque upper town, the Teatro Donizetti combines the stewardship of a world-famous heritage with ambitious festival and repertoire work.
