The Teatro del Giglio is the opera house of Lucca, the Tuscan city where Giacomo Puccini was born. Opened in its present form in 1819, it bears in its name the lily (giglio) of the Bourbons, who then ruled Lucca. The elegant tiered auditorium ranks among the most beautiful in Tuscany. As a teatro di tradizione, the Giglio cultivates the grand Italian repertoire – with particular attention to Puccini – and works closely within the Tuscan theatre network with the houses in Pisa and Livorno. Set in the heart of the old town enclosed by its Renaissance walls, the Teatro del Giglio is the cultural centre of Lucca and a living place of Puccini stewardship.
