The Perm Opera House, officially the Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre, is one of the oldest theatres in Russia. It was founded on 24 November 1870 with Glinka's A Life for the Tsar. The present building was constructed from 1874 to 1880 to plans by Rudolf Karvovsky and rebuilt from 1957 to 1959, retaining the small 19th-century stage. During the Second World War the Leningrad Kirov Theatre, evacuated to Perm, performed here. Since 1956 the house has borne the name of Tchaikovsky, who was born in the region; all his stage works, ten operas and three ballets, are in the repertoire. Teodor Currentzis was artistic director from 2011 to 2019. The ballet company is one of the most popular in Russia, and the Arabesque ballet competition has been held in Perm since 1990. The auditorium seats 972.
The Perm Opera House, founded in 1870, is home to one of the best Russian ballet ensembles — under conductor Teodor Currentzis, the house gained international attention in the 2010s.
