Nowosibirsk, Russia

The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, officially the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, stands on Lenin Square in the city centre and is the largest theatre building in Russia. It was planned from the late 1920s as a House of Science and Culture; Alexander Grinberg's originally Constructivist design was stylistically altered during construction. Its defining feature is the self-supporting dome, 60 metres in diameter and 35 metres high. During the Second World War the building stored collections from evacuated museums, including the Tretyakov Gallery. The theatre opened on 12 May 1945 with Glinka's Ivan Susanin. It has held the title of an academic theatre since 1963 and was extensively modernised in 2005. Its music directors have included Teodor Currentzis and Dmitri Jurowski.
