The Oper Köln is one of the largest opera houses in North Rhine-Westphalia and home to the Gürzenich-Orchestra Cologne. The original opera house at Offenbachplatz, a modern 1957 building with around 1,300 seats, has been under multi-year renovation since 2015 — the longest opera closure in German theatre history. During this time the house ensemble performs in alternative venues like the Staatenhaus, a former exhibition building. The repertoire encompasses classics of the Italian, German, and French canon as well as contemporary works. Despite the difficult venue situation, the house produces about eight premieres per season. Since 2015 the company has performed in temporary venues during the long renovation of its opera house.
The Cologne Opera has been performing in alternative venues since 2015 due to the ongoing renovation of the Opera House at Offenbachplatz — the longest opera odyssey in Germany.
