About the work
The Band's Visit is a musical by David Yazbek (music and lyrics) with a book by Itamar Moses, premiered on Broadway in 2017. Based on the 2007 Israeli film, it won ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score—one of the most decorated works of its season.
Plot
An Egyptian police band travels to a performance in Israel but, through a linguistic misunderstanding, ends up in the wrong, remote desert town of Bet Hatikva instead of the similar-sounding Petah Tikva. With no more buses running, the uniformed musicians must spend a night with the locals. In quiet, incidental encounters between strangers—across barriers of language and culture—moments of loneliness, longing, and unexpected human closeness arise, before the band moves on in the morning.
Cultural significance
The Band's Visit is a quiet, intimate chamber musical that stands in deliberate contrast to the great Broadway spectacles and celebrates the power of the small gesture. Yazbek's score weaves klezmer, Arabic music, and jazz into a unique sound. In a time of political tension, the story of a fleeting understanding between Egyptians and Israelis was hailed as a tender anthem to shared humanity.
