Spring Awakening

Duncan Sheik
Musical · 2006

About the work

Spring Awakening is a rock musical by Duncan Sheik (music) and Steven Sater (lyrics and book), premiered on Broadway in 2006. Based on Frank Wedekind's scandal-shrouded drama Spring Awakening (1891), it won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Plot

In provincial late-nineteenth-century Germany, adolescents wrestle with their awakening sexuality while the adult world keeps them in ignorance and shame. The clever Wendla, the rebellious Melchior, and the desperate, overwhelmed Moritz suffer under the life-denying double standards of their parents and teachers. Withheld sex education, unwanted pregnancy, and suicide lead to catastrophe—a blazing indictment of a society that abandons its children.

Cultural significance

Spring Awakening radically combined Wedekind's timeless material with modern alternative rock: when the characters begin to sing, they break out of the nineteenth-century corset and reach for hand microphones. This fusion of historical drama and contemporary sound made the work a phenomenon that reached a young audience. An acclaimed 2015 revival integrated deaf and hearing performers and underlined the work's enduring power.
