About the work
Paint Your Wagon is a musical by Frederick Loewe (music) and Alan Jay Lerner (lyrics and book), premiered on Broadway in 1951. Set during the California Gold Rush, the work combines the Lerner-Loewe melody with American frontier romance.
Plot
During the 1853 California Gold Rush, a gold strike gives rise to the wild boomtown of Rumson. The prospector Ben Rumson and his daughter Jennifer witness the settlement's rise and fall. Jennifer falls in love with the young Mexican Julio, while the town grapples with a shortage of women, social tensions, and the transience of gold-rush fortune. When the gold runs out, the town falls apart—but love and the pioneer spirit remain.
Cultural significance
Paint Your Wagon is famous for its songs They Call the Wind Maria and Wand'rin' Star, which became standards. The 1969 film with Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood brought the material to a broad audience. The work captures the rugged myth of the American West and is among the most atmospheric creations of the Lerner-Loewe team.
