Biography

Frederick Loewe (1901–1988), born in Berlin as the son of an operetta tenor, was an Austrian-American composer. Classically trained in Europe, he emigrated to the United States, where with the lyricist Alan Jay Lerner he formed one of the most successful partnerships in Broadway history. It produced Brigadoon (1947), My Fair Lady (1956)—one of the greatest of all musical successes—Gigi (1958), and Camelot (1960). Loewe's elegant melody, shaped by the European operetta tradition, lent the American musical new lustre.
