About the work

High School Musical ("Disney's High School Musical on Stage!") is a stage adaptation of the 2006 Disney Channel film of the same name, with a book by David Simpatico. The songs come from numerous songwriters, with additional stage numbers added. The stage version was released for performance in 2007 and quickly became one of the most frequently performed pieces at schools and youth theatres worldwide.

Plot

At East High School, the popular basketball captain Troy and the shy, gifted newcomer Gabriella fall in love during a karaoke performance. When the two decide to audition for the school musical, they come into conflict with their school's social pigeonholes: Troy's basketball team and Gabriella's study group fear losing their stars, and the ambitious diva Sharpay schemes against the newcomers. In the end the young people overcome clique boundaries and expectations—and realise that one is allowed to be more than just one thing.

Cultural significance

High School Musical became a worldwide youth phenomenon as a Disney Channel film and sparked an entire franchise. The stage version, with hits such as We're All in This Together and Breaking Free, is deliberately designed for young ensembles and is among the most frequently performed musicals at schools. With its message against social pigeonholing and for self-realisation, it struck the nerve of a whole generation and shaped the modern youth musical.
