About the work
The Count of Monte Cristo is a musical by Frank Wildhorn (music) with lyrics by Jack Murphy, whose German-language version had its successful premiere at the Theater St. Gallen in 2009. Based on Alexandre Dumas's adventure novel, it is especially popular in the German-speaking world.
Plot
The young sailor Edmond Dantès is wrongly thrown into the island prison Château d'If on his wedding day through the intrigue of envious rivals. After years of imprisonment he escapes with the help of a fellow prisoner and discovers a fabulous treasure. Returning as the mysterious, immensely wealthy "Count of Monte Cristo," he sets out to take revenge on those who betrayed him—but the campaign of vengeance exacts its price, until Dantès realises that only forgiveness can bring him peace.
Cultural significance
The Count of Monte Cristo combines Wildhorn's grand romantic pop ballads with the epic force of Dumas's revenge story. The work was successfully restaged at numerous German-language theatres—from St. Gallen and Cologne to various municipal houses—and is part of the characteristic repertoire of the Wildhorn musical in the German-speaking world. Its blend of adventure, love, and revenge appeals to a broad audience.
