About the work

Georges Bizet's opera in four acts was premiered on 3 March 1875 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris and is based on Prosper Mérimée's novella of the same name. The work marked a turning point in operatic history through its uncompromising realism and its radical treatment of passion, social barrier, and violence. The premiere audience was scandalised by the freedom of its heroine; Bizet died only a few months later, never witnessing the worldwide triumph of his work.

Plot

The spirited cigarette worker Carmen seduces the soldier Don José in Seville and leads him to betray both his duty and his fiancée Micaëla. Don José deserts and joins a band of smugglers, but Carmen, who longs for freedom, turns her affections to the dazzling toreador Escamillo. Consumed by jealousy, Don José confronts Carmen outside the bullring while inside Escamillo is being celebrated. When she refuses to return to him and defiantly throws his ring at his feet, he stabs her to death.

Cultural significance

Carmen is the most frequently performed opera in the world and established an uncompromising realism that anticipated verismo by years. Melodies such as the Habanera "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" and the Toreador Song belong to the collective cultural memory. The title role is regarded as one of the great parts for mezzo-soprano, demanding both dramatic and vocal sensuality. Countless films, ballets, and adaptations—from Carlos Saura to screen versions—attest to the unbroken fascination of the character.
