Biography

Georges Bizet was born in 1838 in Paris and created with Carmen one of the most performed operas in music history. The work, premiered in 1875 at the Opéra-Comique, broke with all conventions of the genre through its unsparing portrayal of passion and death. Tragically, Bizet did not live to see the worldwide success of his opera, as he died only three months after the controversial premiere. His earlier opera The Pearl Fishers with its famous friendship duet also enjoys lasting popularity. Bizet won the Prix de Rome at nineteen and was considered one of the greatest talents of his generation. Tchaikovsky called Carmen the most perfect opera ever. Bizet died in 1875 in Bougival near Paris, only thirty-six years old.
