About the work
"Bondi Beach" is a comedy by the Berlin-based playwright Rebekka Kricheldorf. The play premiered in 2023 under this title at Theater Ingolstadt (directed by Schirin Khodadadian) and was also staged at the Hans Otto Theater Potsdam; in a more recent version the author changed the title to "Baga Beach". With sharp, rapid-fire dialogue and a keen sense of the zeitgeist, Kricheldorf tells of a group of longtime friends in midlife – of friendship, responsibility, freedom and the fear of missing out on one's own lifetime.
Plot
Five longtime friends – Zoe, Dennis, Tristan, Fiffy and Nico – have shared much over the decades. Their former party lifestyle has long given way to moderate leisure pursuits, such as wine-hiking in appropriate Gore-Tex gear. Now they meet to arrange – between pragmatism, insight and reluctance – their advance directives and funeral wishes. From this occasion unfolds a rapid conversation about right decisions and missed opportunities, about real life versus false life, about the search for oneself between gain and loss, love and loneliness – an anarchic, mordantly funny reckoning with growing old.
Cultural significance
Rebekka Kricheldorf is among the most frequently staged contemporary German-language playwrights; her comedies dissect, with verbal wit and acuity, the self-images and contradictions of the educated middle class. "Bondi Beach" applies this gaze to the generation now confronting ageing, mortality and the reckoning of their own lives. The play exemplifies a theatre that negotiates social sensibilities through pointed dialogue comedies – entertaining and exposing at once.
