Biography
Rebekka Kricheldorf (born 1974 in Freiburg im Breisgau) is among the most distinctive voices in contemporary German-language drama. Kricheldorf studied Romance languages and scenic writing, and her work combines sharp social observation with a Brechtian willingness to expose the mechanisms of dramatic construction. Her plays include Villa Dolorosa (2009, a fierce reworking of Chekhov's Three Sisters), Homo Empathicus (2014), Die sexuellen Neurosen unserer Zeit, and Fräulein Agnes (2019). Kricheldorf frequently engages with classic texts from Chekhov to Ibsen, reinterpreting their bourgeois dramas through the lens of contemporary middle-class neurosis. Her work is staged regularly at major German-language houses including the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Wiener Burgtheater, and the Schauspiel Leipzig. She has received multiple major German theatrical awards including the Kleist Prize for young playwrights in 2009.
