The Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway, originally built in 1911 as a horse-auction and exhibition hall and converted into a theatre in 1923, is, with 1,526 seats, one of the most history-laden houses of the theatre district. The auditorium with its deep stage and excellent sightlines predestines the house for visually demanding productions. Legendary is the Winter Garden's association with Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats", which ran here from 1982 to 2000 in over 7,485 performances — at the time the longest-running Broadway production. "Mamma Mia!" followed, later "Rocky" and "School of Rock". Currently "Back to the Future: The Musical" resides here. The Shubert Organization, which runs the house to this day, has always reserved the Winter Garden for prestigious productions.
The Winter Garden Theatre in New York, opened in 1911, was the venue of historic Broadway premieres — Cats ran here for 18 years (1982-2000) and established the theatre as a Mecca of mega-musicals.
