Vivian Beaumont Theater

New York City, USA

The Vivian Beaumont Theater is the only Broadway house outside the Theater District near Times Square, located in the Lincoln Center complex on Manhattan's Upper West Side (150 West 65th Street). Opened on 21 October 1965, it was one of the last buildings designed by the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, with the interior and stage created by the celebrated scenic designer Jo Mielziner. With around 1,080 seats, raked "stadium seating" and a thrust stage reaching far into the auditorium, it differs markedly from traditional Broadway theatres – a large house for plays and a medium-sized one for musicals. It is named after the patron Vivian Beaumont Allen, a former actress and heiress to the May Department Stores fortune, who made its construction possible with a gift of three million dollars. Since 1985 the theatre has been operated by the nonprofit Lincoln Center Theater, America's largest not-for-profit theatre, and it is the only venue outside the Times Square district eligible for the Tony Awards.
