Théâtre National Mohammed V

Rabat, Morocco

The Mohammed V National Theatre in central Rabat, near the medina and Avenue Mohammed V, was the first theatre built in Morocco after independence. It was erected on the initiative of, and with funds from, the Ministry of Habous, and construction was completed in 1961. King Hassan II inaugurated it on 14 March 1962 as the Théâtre Mohammed V, in honour of his late father. A dahir of 22 February 1973 made it a public institution with its own legal personality under the supervision of the cultural authority and gave it its current name as the national theatre. The theatre has its own acting company, the Troupe du théâtre national. Its programme covers theatre, music, opera, ballet, cinema, children's shows and exhibitions.
