The Royal Theatre of Rabat, known as the Grand Theatre of Rabat until its opening, stands on the left bank of the Bou Regreg near the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. It is one of the last works of architect Zaha Hadid, who died in 2016: its sweeping form echoes the course of the river, while the faceted walls of the main auditorium refer to the muqarnas of Moroccan architecture. Planning began in 2010 and construction on 7 October 2014; the building was completed in 2021, but its opening was delayed. After a formal inauguration in October 2024, it opened to the public on 22 April 2026. The main auditorium seats 1,821, the small theatre 170 and the outdoor amphitheatre around 7,000. It is run by a foundation chaired by Princess Lalla Hasnaa.
The Grand Théâtre de Rabat was completed in 2019 according to designs by Zaha Hadid — the curved architecture by the Iraqi-British star architect is one of the most spectacular theatre buildings in Africa.
