Théâtre National de Strasbourg

Straßburg, France

The Théâtre National de Strasbourg is the only French national theatre outside Paris. It occupies the former building of the regional parliament of Alsace-Lorraine on Place de la République, designed in Neo-Renaissance style by architects August Hartel and Skjold Neckelmann. After the First World War the conservatory moved in; the assembly chamber, destroyed by bombing in 1944, was rebuilt as a theatre auditorium by Pierre Sonrel between 1950 and 1957. The Comédie de l'Est performed here before André Malraux raised it to the rank of a national theatre. Performances take place in the Salle Bernard-Marie Koltès, the Salle Hubert Gignoux and two halls at the Espace Klaus Michael Grüber. The theatre includes the École supérieure d'art dramatique. Caroline Guiela Nguyen has been its director since 2023.
