The Opéra National du Rhin was formed in 1972 by merging the companies of Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Colmar, and has held the status of a national opera since 1997. In Strasbourg it performs at the opera house on the Place Broglie, a neoclassical building with an Ionic portico that opened in 1821, was largely destroyed in the German bombardment of 1870 and was then rebuilt. The ballet company has been based in Mulhouse since 1985, and Colmar hosts the Opéra Studio for young singers. The Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg and the Orchestre national de Mulhouse play for the company. Before 1919, conductors such as Hans Pfitzner, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer and George Szell worked in Strasbourg. In 2019 Opernwelt magazine named it Opera House of the Year.
The Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg is a cross-border cooperation between Strasbourg, Mulhouse, and Colmar — a uniquely European three-city opera company on the German-French border.
