Théâtre National de la Colline

Paris, France

The Théâtre National de la Colline on Rue Malte-Brun in the 20th arrondissement was inaugurated on 7 January 1988. It stands on the site of the Théâtre de l'Est parisien, which Guy Rétoré had built up from his company and whose building was demolished in 1983. Architects Valentin Fabre and Jean Perrottet designed a typical 1980s building with a twelve-metre glass façade, interior walkways and exposed concrete. The theatre has a large auditorium and a small, fully modular one. Its first director, Jorge Lavelli, devoted La Colline exclusively to 20th-century and contemporary drama; he was followed by Alain Françon, Stéphane Braunschweig and Wajdi Mouawad. Since March 2026 Julie Deliquet has run the national theatre, which also employs a troupe of young actors.
