Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord

Paris, France

The Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in the 10th arrondissement is one of the most mythical theatre spaces in Europe and one of the most influential experimental stages of the late twentieth century. Opened in 1876 as a conventional boulevard theatre, the house stood empty from 1952 and decayed. In 1974 Peter Brook discovered the half-ruined space with its exposed brick walls, flaking paint, and revealed arches, and made it the home of his Centre International de Recherche Théâtrale. Brook directed formative works here for over 30 years, including Conférence des oiseaux, La Tragédie de Carmen, Mahabharata, and The Man Who. The space itself, with its traces of decay, became an aesthetic manifesto — not a smooth theatre hall but a vessel bearing history. Since 2010 several directors have shared leadership; the house remains an international reference point for minimalist, text- and actor-centred theatre.

Did you know?

Peter Brook refused for decades to have the crumbling walls restored — the unfinished space was for him the essence of theatre itself, irrevocably marked by everything that had been performed within it.
