Théâtre Marigny

Paris, France

The Théâtre Marigny in the Champs-Élysées gardens is one of the most elegant Parisian houses and combines over 180 years of history with contemporary musical and theatre productions. The current building, designed in 1884 by Charles Garnier (the architect of the Opéra Garnier), stands on the site of a theatrical tradition extending back to 1835. The house has a characteristic octagonal auditorium with 1,024 seats — an architectural peculiarity that enables intimate acoustics with generous capacity. The smaller Salle Popesco, installed in 1961 in the basement, offers 300 seats for chamber pieces. The Marigny became from the 1950s the centre of high-quality Parisian boulevard theatre, and from 2010 increasingly a house for elaborate musicals in the Paris area — productions like La Cage aux Folles, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, and My Fair Lady have shaped recent seasons. After an extensive renovation in 2018 under Jean-Luc Choplin the house was reopened.

Did you know?

Charles Garnier rebuilt the house in 1884 — the same architect who had created the Opéra Garnier just five minutes away in 1875, with the same sense of bourgeois festivity on a smaller scale.
