Théâtre des Champs-Élysées

Paris, France

The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées stands on avenue Montaigne in Paris. Impresario Gabriel Astruc had it built between 1911 and 1913; following a scheme by Henry van de Velde, the brothers Auguste and Gustave Perret built it in reinforced concrete, the first Art Deco building in the city. A relief by Antoine Bourdelle adorns the facade, and Maurice Denis painted the dome. The theatre opened on 2 April 1913; on 29 May that year the Ballets Russes' premiere of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring provoked one of the most famous riots in music history. The main hall seats up to 1,905. Today the house presents a few staged operas a year, mostly baroque or chamber works, and a major concert season; it is the home venue of the Orchestre National de France. It has been a listed historic monument since 1957.

Did you know?

The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées experienced probably the most scandalous premiere in music history in 1913 — Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps caused riots in the audience and police had to intervene.
