The Theater Rampe in Stuttgart is one of the most important independent venues in Baden-Württemberg and a centre for contemporary performance, dance, and experimental theatre. Housed in the historic building of the former Markushalle in southern Stuttgart, it deliberately sees itself as an independent production and guest-performance house and as a counterpoint to the large state theatre. It offers independent groups and emerging artists a professional stage and is regarded as a laboratory for socially relevant, often participatory and discursive theatre forms. With festivals, co-productions, and a decidedly open concept of art, the Rampe shapes the independent scene far beyond Stuttgart and understands theatre as a public space for thinking together.
The house occupies a former market hall with an attached church — sacred space and independent stage meet here head-on.
