The Liederhalle Stuttgart culture and congress centre, opened in 1956, is regarded as one of the most important examples of West German postwar architecture. The award-winning building with its expressive formal language houses several halls, including the large Beethoven Hall, and hosts numerous concerts of Stuttgart's musical life. The curved mosaic façade of the Beethoven Hall is regarded as an icon of 1950s architecture and is a protected monument. As an event and congress centre, the Liederhalle combines classical concerts with conferences and events and is thus a versatile cultural focal point of the Baden-Württemberg state capital. Its architecture was pioneering for postwar concert-hall construction throughout Germany.
The curved walls of the Beethoven Hall follow purely acoustic calculations — the organic form is not decoration but sound design in concrete and mosaic.
