The Public Theater on Lafayette Street is one of the most influential stages in the United States and a home of innovative, often socially engaged theatre. Founded in 1954 by the legendary producer Joseph Papp, the company first made its name with free Shakespeare for all – a tradition that lives on today in the summer "Shakespeare in the Park" at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. In its historic home at Astor Place, the Public houses several stages as well as the intimate music club Joe's Pub. Many groundbreaking works began here, among them Hair, A Chorus Line and Hamilton, before moving to Broadway. More than almost any other institution, the Public Theater stands for a vibrant, accessible and daring American theatre.
Its home at Astor Place was originally the Astor Library, one of New York's first free public libraries.
