The Teatru Astra (Astra Opera House) is, alongside the Teatru Aurora, the second great opera house of Victoria (Rabat in Maltese), the capital of the island of Gozo. It is run by the Soċjetà Filarmonika Leone, one of the town's two long-established band clubs whose rivalry has long shaped Gozo's cultural life. Opened in 1968, the house has a large, modern-equipped auditorium and ranks among the island's most important venues. Every autumn the theatre stages a lavish grand opera production, engaging international soloists alongside local chorus and orchestra — a remarkable feat for so small an island. Beyond opera, the Astra serves as a cinema, concert and event venue and is a vibrant centre of social life in Victoria.
The band club that runs it, the Leone Philharmonic Society, has existed since the 1860s.
