Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi

Triest, Italy

The Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi is the opera house of Trieste and one of Italy's tradition-rich lyric stages. Opened in 1801 as the Teatro Nuovo, it was named after Giuseppe Verdi upon the composer's death in 1901 – at a time when Trieste still belonged to Austria-Hungary. The neoclassical house, on whose design Gian Antonio Selva (architect of La Fenice) and Matteo Pertsch collaborated, stands near the harbour on the Gulf of Trieste. As an interface between Italian and Central European culture, the theatre cultivates, alongside the grand opera repertoire, a special love of operetta and hosts its own international operetta festival. Today the Teatro Verdi is one of Italy's state opera foundations and the musical centre of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
