Teatro de la Maestranza

Sevilla, Spain

The Teatro de la Maestranza is Seville's opera house and lies near the Guadalquivir, beside the Torre del Oro and the Real Maestranza bullring. For a long time the city in which more than 150 operas are set lacked a suitable venue. The architects Aurelio del Pozo and Luis Marín designed the building on the site of a former artillery barracks; it opened on 2 May 1991 in the presence of Queen Sofía, as one of the cultural venues prepared for Expo 92. The cylindrical main hall seats around 1,800 and has variable acoustics for opera, concerts, zarzuela, flamenco and ballet; a refurbishment in the 2000s doubled the size of the stage. Chamber operas are staged in the Sala Manuel García. The theatre is home to the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, and in 2018 it hosted the European Film Awards.
