The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, also known as the Opera di Firenze, is the opera house of Florence and the main venue of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival, whose orchestra is based here. The new building near the Cascine park and Porta al Prato station was designed by the Rome practice ABDR Architetti Associati and replaced the old Teatro Comunale. The Sala Grande was inaugurated on 21 December 2011 with Beethoven's Ninth under Zubin Mehta; after the stage machinery had been installed, the house opened for good on 10 May 2014. The Sala Grande seats around 1,800 for opera, the adaptable Zubin Mehta Auditorium for symphony concerts followed in 2021, and an open-air stage on the roof holds up to 2,000. The old Teatro Comunale on Corso Italia was given up in 2014 and demolished in 2021; its chandeliers designed by Carlo Scarpa now hang in the auditorium.
The Teatro Comunale di Firenze, opened in 1862, is home to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino — one of the oldest and most renowned Italian music festivals, taking place in May/June.
