The Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (TNC) on Plaça de les Arts in Barcelona, opposite L'Auditori, was created by the Catalan Government to promote theatre and dance in the Catalan language. Ricardo Bofill designed the building in the form of a Greek temple; construction began on 8 November 1991. The design was controversial, with critics likening it to a mausoleum. The first performance, on 12 November 1996, was Tony Kushner's Angels in America in Catalan, directed by Josep Maria Flotats in the Sala Tallers; the house was officially inaugurated on 11 September 1997 with Santiago Rusiñol's L'auca del senyor Esteve. It has three halls: the Sala Gran with 866 seats, the Sala Petita with 266 to 500 seats, and the Sala Tallers with flexible seating. Carme Portaceli has been artistic director since 2021.
The Teatre Nacional de Catalunya in Barcelona, opened in 1997, is Catalonia's most important drama stage — the building by Ricardo Bofill with Classicist columns cultivates a repertoire exclusively in Catalan.
