The Richard Rodgers Theatre on West 46th Street is one of the most prestigious Broadway theatres. Opened in 1925 as Chanin's 46th Street Theatre, the house was renamed in 1990 in honour of the legendary composer Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) — creator of musical classics like Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music, and The King and I. The hall with around 1,320 seats has been home to Hamilton since 2015, Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip-hop musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton. The show won eleven Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and became a cultural phenomenon — black-market tickets reached prices of over 2,000 dollars, President Barack Obama visited three times during his term in office.
The "Hamilton" production requires a turntable with two counter-rotating rings — performers walk against the rotation during songs and so appear to run in place.
