The New National Theatre Tokyo (NNTT), opened in 1997 in Shibuya, is Japan's national theatre for opera, ballet, and contemporary dance, and the only Japanese house with permanent opera, ballet, and modern dance ensembles modelled on the European tradition. The modern complex comprises three venues: the Opera Palace with 1,814 seats, the Playhouse with 1,038 seats, and the experimental Pit. The acoustics of the main hall are considered among the best in Asia. The repertoire combines the Western opera canon with Japanese works; operas specially written for the house are regularly premiered. The NNTT is Japan's most important gateway to the international opera world.
For Japanese works the house has separate stage machinery with a revolving stage and trapdoors modelled on traditional Kabuki theatre.
